Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2
I’ve been thinking much about prayer lately, probably because I am going through a study, “When God’s People Pray” by Jim Cymbala, pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church. I have been so encouraged by the many verses in Scripture that talk about prayer… and convicted that I don’t pray about more things and that I don’t pray believing God can do things that seem impossible! But I want to respond to both the encouragement and the conviction by “continuing steadfastly in prayer… with thanksgiving.”
Jesus said to His disciples – at Gethsemane – when He found them sleeping, “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” But after going away alone to pray a second time Jesus came and found them sleeping again. Can you imagine? I can’t help but wonder how the disciples might have responded to the arrest of Jesus differently if they had stayed awake and prayed.
My flesh is weak too, even if my spirit is willing. I don’t want to fall asleep again after being awakened to the amazing gift of prayer through this excellent study on prayer.
Oh Lord, may I continue steadfastly in prayer!
